Client Alert — ATO Fuel Response Payment Plan

Posted 08 April 2026

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced a Fuel Response Payment Plan to support businesses experiencing financial pressure due to rising fuel costs and supply disruptions.

This initiative forms part of the Australian Government’s broader fuel security and cost-of-living response and is designed to provide short-term cash flow relief for impacted taxpayers.

What Support is Available?

Eligible businesses and individuals may be able to access from the ATO:

  • Payment plans of up to 36 months
  • No upfront payment in many cases
  • Remission of interest charges (GIC)
  • Reduced penalties where appropriate
  • Deferral of tax payment due dates

These measures are designed to help businesses manage short-term cash flow challenges while fuel costs remain elevated.

Who Should Consider Applying?

The ATO Fuel Response Payment Plan may be suitable for many sectors impacted by increased fuel costs including transport and logistics, construction and trade and agriculture and primary producers.

If rising fuel costs are affecting your ability to meet ATO payment obligations, you may be eligible for assistance.

When is Support Available?

The Fuel Response Payment Plan is available right now through to 30 June 2026, with the ATO monitoring conditions to determine whether further support is required.

You can find more information on the response plan on the ATO's website here

Why Act Early?

Engaging with the ATO early can have many benefits for businesses struggling with ATO debt.

With an increase of stricter measures introduced around payment plan eligibility in the past 12 months by the ATO, acting early to this response plan can improve chances of interest remission, reduce penalties, provide more flexible payment arrangements and avoid any escalation of ATO debt recovery action.
